"These New Works
in oil and pastel represent my continuing attraction
to Shippan, a place I've known all my life, my love
for Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, where I paint
and spend the summer by the sea, and the Adirondack
Mountains, a dramatic landscape of rugged peaks and
thick forests surrounding clear lakes which reflect
the autumn colors." -

The Chesterfield
Gallery presented new works by Artist and Author Robert Selkowitz
We had an opening reception highlighting
Robert’s new pastels and oils, focusing on Shippan pastels
and several of the porch oil paintings he is known for. Please
come by to view these latest works.
When asked about returning to
Shippan to capture his childhood neighborhood,
Selkowitz had this
to say:

“Coming
back to paint Shippan nearly fifty years after the
close of my glorious childhood
here has
been like returning to Eden. To wander the neighborhood
in Spring with all the Azaleas in full bloom, with the
sunlight streaming through the branches of the Red Maples,
has been a vision of beauty. I have so enjoyed
setting up my easel and painting those visions of beauty,
and speaking
with the people who encounter me while I am working. To
be able to gaze at the Sound, recalling my years of beachcombing
and rock scampering, and capturing those scenes in my art
is very fulfilling. I love it here.” |
